Ok - I was wrong.  This is a bug in automake (or more correctly, an 
incompatibility between autoconf >= 2.53 and automake < 1.6).

With automake 1.6.1 and any version of autoconf, the PACKAGE variable 
gets defined correctly.

So perhaps you should upgrade automake Simone?  I'll also put a PREREQ 
for automake into configure.ac
