Hmm, working fine here, but I found that configure has got some magic
exec_prefix feature.
Have you tried like following:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local --bindir /usr/local/bin --mandir
/usr/local/share/man
or
make install exec_prefix=/usr/local
File INSTALLING updated.
BTW: can you send me all the compiler warnings, e.g. by make >make.txt 2>&1
